Who We Are
Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based positive youth development program for 3rd-8th grade girls. Our mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. We envision a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.
GOTR of Southwest Missouri is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and part of a national network of over 200 councils operating in all 50 states. Operating locally since 2008, we have served over 4000 girls in southwest Missouri.
We inspire girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind. Trained volunteer coaches lead small teams of 8-15 girls twice a week through our research-based curricula. The 10-week program creatively incorporates running into lessons that teach critical life skills designed to build character, enhance social-emotional health, and promote active lifestyles. Girls gain confidence and connection through lessons that focus on decision making, healthy relationships, and helping others, all while training for a 5k!
The program culminates with girls positively impacting their community through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete the 5k. Completing a 5k gives the girls a tangible sense of accomplishment as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. The result—making the seemingly impossible, possible and teaching girls that they can.
All of this is accomplished through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff, and the community. Girls on the Run reaches girls at a critical development age and strengthens their confidence at a time when they face extreme societal pressure.
