Project Overview

Gary has spent his life working hard, taking odd jobs to stay afloat throughout the years. He has always had dreams of getting his high school equivalency and becoming a mechanic.

When Gary's kids come to him with their favorite book, he smiles and listens while they read to him about princesses and far off lands, unable to follow along.

When the doctor's office asks him to fill out paperwork, he asks the receptionist to help, telling her that he left his glasses at home. Gary has a secret that he hides well.

Gary can't read.

Gary is not a number, he is a person. Gary is a person who takes reading classes at Joplin NALA Read. There are many people like Gary in our community, and they all deserve a chance to reach their full potential.

You can help an adult learner like Gary.

Joplin NALA is funded by incredible people like you! Because of you, adult leaners can take classes in reading, math, English, digital literacy, health literacy, and financial literacy at no cost to the student.

Your generous donation directly benefits your neighbors, and we are so grateful for your support. This year, your support means more than we could ever express.

In March of last year, when the health of our students, volunteers, staff, and community faced a significant risk, we made the difficult decision to close the doors of our offices and classrooms. We had to create virtual programming from scratch as many organizations across the world had to do.

Our 2020 fundraisers were cancelled, and our students were unable to come to classes in person. We have worked with students to identify roadblocks in digital learning and worked to impliment programs that have helped them access our resources for the past year. We are excited to get back into the classroom once it is safe for our community to do so! Thank you for helping us reach the goal of serving students through this pandemic and in recovery from the major life change we have all had to face!

About Joplin NALA Read

Today’s children are our nation’s hope for building a strong future. But many children in our community live in educationally and economically disadvantaged homes. They often enter school two or more years behind their peers and are more likely to drop out of school. These children miss out on high-quality early learning experiences. The cycle of low-literacy continues.

In Missouri 77% of lower-income students read below proficient levels compared to 51% of higher-income students. Children who have parents and caregivers who read to them enjoy a substantial advantage in school over children who are not read to. If a child’s mother or father struggles with reading and writing, the child’s own path to literacy is all the more challenging. The cycle of low-literacy continues.

In Jasper County alone, from 2009 to 2013 the number of families with children reported by school districts as having limited English language skills has more than doubled. But dual-language learners are one of the few groups for whom reading proficiency rates did not improve over the past ten years. The cycle of low literacy continues.

In the Joplin community, this translates over 12,000 adults who lack essential literacy skills. Moms and Dads who struggle to make ends meet because they lack basic education. Parents, grandparents, and caregivers who are unable to read to their children, provide their children with early learning experiences, or even read a note from their child's school.

Joplin NALA Read’s Adult Literacy, English as a Second Language, and Family Literacy program fosters and strengthens essential literacy skills enabling learners to reach their full potential. As learners increase their essential skills they become more involved in their child's education and transmit the value of literacy to their children. Now we can close the book on illiteracy.
