Project Overview

Kids' Harbor's project seeks to partially fund a trained Community Outreach Coordinator to provide Stewards of Children training throughout the agency's 10 county service area including Lake of the Ozarks, Fort Leonard Wood, and surrounding communities. Stewards of Children is the only nationally available
program scientifically proven to increase knowledge, improve attitudes, and change child protective behaviors of adults thereby creating safer communities for children. To learn more about Kids' Harbor's Child Abuse Prevention Program, visit our website at

Stewards of Children is a prevention training program that teaches adults how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. This training is appropriate for any adult concerned about the safety
of children; particularly parents, youth serving organizations, educators, child care providers, counselors, and faith centers. Together, we can end child sexual abuse in our community!

We know as adults it is our responsibility to provide for the health, welfare, and safety of the children in our community. Children should not be expected to protect themselves. As adults, that is our responsibility. Stewards
of Children instructs adults in putting into place Codes of Conduct, limiting one on one situations with children, and other policies and procedures to help support safer places for kids. By educating adults, safer spaces are created for children to prevent sexual abuse.

Child sexual abuse is one of the most prevalent public health issues facing society today. One in 10 children will be the victim of sexual abuse before their 18th birthday. Child sexual abuse takes many forms, and they aren't just physical. Child sexual abuse can occur anywhere. It happens in places like homes, neighborhoods, schools, and youth sports environments, but it
also occurs online, such as child pornography or communicating in a sexual manner by phone or internet. To prevent abuse, we have to break through the stigma and shame and talk about how child sexual abuse happens. ( Further, the health and social impacts of child sexual abuse on a survivor last a lifetime and affect us all socially and financially.

The goal of this project will be to provide the two hour Stewards of Children program to adults throughout the Lake of the Ozarks, Fort Leonard Wood, and surrounding communities. These adults will show increased awareness and recognition of how to identify, prevent, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. Kids' Harbor, Inc. will utilize pre and post tests provided by Darkness 2 Light, the creators of the Stewards of Children Program, to evaluate the
knowledge gained through the program. Kids' Harbor will focus on providing this training to youth serving organizations, churches, and other adults throughout the community. The program can take place at our
location or at a location of the group's choosing. Kids' Harbor will seek partners to host the program through our social media channels, via letters to churches, schools, and youth serving organizations, and while providing community presentations.

About Kids' Harbor, Inc.

Kids' Harbor Child Advocacy Center provides coordinated services for child abuse victims and their families in a warm, child-friendly atmosphere. These services include forensic interviews, forensic medical exams, counseling, and advocacy; all of which are designed to lessen the trauma experienced by the child. In this child-focused, child-friendly environment, representatives from many disciplines make decisions about the investigation, treatment, and prosecution of child abuse cases.

All of our services are provided free of charge to children ages 0-18 years of age and are referred to us due to allegations of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, as well as physical and medical neglect, witnesses to violence and drug endangerment. Between our two centers in Osage Beach and St. Robert, MO we serve 10 counties in the state of Missouri, including the Fort Leonard Wood Military Base. On average 12-15% of our annual referrals are military dependents. In 2014, 703 children were referred to Kids' Harbor for services.

Kids' Harbor adheres to the Child First Doctrine: The child is our first priority. Not the needs of the family, not the story, not the evidence, not the needs of the courts, not the needs of law enforcement, not the needs of children’s services, not the needs of attorneys. The child is our first priority.
