Project Overview

Wildcat Glades Friends Group educates hundreds of children, parents, grandparents, community members, and nature lovers each year. As our mission has grown, so has the demand for adequate space to meet the needs of our guests. We needed space. We needed a place in out of the rain. We needed a gathering location for our programs. We needed an education cottage.

Fortunately, Missouri American Water stepped in to fill a gap. They generously provided the base funding for this project. (nearly $14,000). As we consulted the City of Joplin, we discovered we needed expert advice, leading to the contribution of Michael Wischmeyer of Corner Greer and Associates Architects. Michael has navigated Wildcat through the process of identifying the true needs of this project in a way that will represent Wildcat well into the future.

Much to our delight, a very generous, environmentally conscientious individual(s) approached our Executive Director with a donation to place solar panels on this cottage. This donation will completely cover the investment setting an excellent example while educating the community on the benefits of alternative energy solutions.

A few other anonymous donors have pledged another $15,000 while Orbis promised $10,000.

Since the initial idea of an education cottage, this project has blossomed from a make-shift portable shed to a full building complete with heating and air, porches, and internet access capabilities. With the growth of the dream, the costs have also grown. We need your help to dress our education cottage with windows, doors, drywall, paint, landscaping, cabinetry, chairs, and tables.

Consider donating today to bring nature a little closer to home and give a gift that will serve our community, visitors, and inspire future generations.

About Wildcat Glades Friends Group

Wildcat Glades Friends Group is comprised of community volunteers who care deeply about Wildcat Park and the surrounding natural environment, including the globally unique chert glade ecoslystem located within the park.  Our mission is to protect the area known as Wildcat park, the chert glade environment, habitat, and wildlife by promoting awareness and sustainability, providing education and recreation space and programs, and sponsoring nature-based activities.

We believe the park is a gem neatly packed in Joplin's backyard.  We see thousands of visitors annually.  They hike, picnic, swim, have gatherings, host scout activities, kayak, just to name a few.  Our guests often participate in free programing offered by Wildcat Glades Friends Group.  While it may be free to the general public, it certainly has a dollar cost.  Our goal is to continue to offer and expand our offering of nature education to all who are willing to listen.  We want to create a community dedicated to the preservation and the conservation of Wildcat Glades Park.

Our area of focus stretches from Redings Mill Bridge to the Falls in Joplin.  We have agreements with the Missouri Department of Conservation, Newton County and the City of Joplin to maintain the area and offer programing.
