About Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity

Serving Jasper County since 1989, Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing ministry affiliated with Habitat for Humanity International.  Our vision is to eliminate substandard housing and homelessness by providing homeownership opportunities and critical home repairs to qualified families in need.  Our mission statement says it all:  Seeking to put God's love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.

Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity has been incredibly blessed to work with thousands of volunteers, donors, and supporters to build 170+ homes with partner families, and repair over 300 homes for homeowners in Jasper County.  Safe, decent, affordable housing is still a great need in Jasper County, and we currently have six houses in different phases of construction with more planned.  Our Critical Home Repair program and A Brush with Kindness program are both ramping up for a busy Spring.

The opportunity of homeownership for individuals and families, who otherwise would not have that chance, is a special task that Habitat for Humanity assists in making a reality.  Habitat houses are worked for, not given.  By working towards homeownership and taking part in the construction, partner families have their time and hearts invested in their own homes.  Volunteers, builders, and homeowners work together to build a house, and an appreciation comes with that collective endeavor.  Qualifications for our partner families include a need for better housing, willingness to partner by completing “sweat equity” hours, being within income guidelines, and living or working within the Jasper County area for at least 1 year.  Habitat works with families who are at low to moderate income levels, with our current guidelines for eligibility being 30-80% AMI.  A large majority of our partner families experience homeownership for the first time.  We provide a hand up not a hand out so, once the house is completed, it is sold to our partner family with a 30 year mortgage with an affordable payment.

In 2013, we started a program called “A Brush with Kindness” that offers help with light exterior repairs to homeowners within our service area and income guidelines.  Plus, starting in 2018, we started our Critical Home Repair Program at help homeowners with larger home repairs.  These programs have involved hundreds of volunteers helping their neighbors with a hand up, plus helped over 300 homeowners with the needed repairs to live safely in their homes.
