Project Overview

Our primary mission is lifting children up through increasing literacy rates in southwest Missouri. By helping children get this good start in life, they become lifetime readers and leaders in our society. Statistics show that if a child isn't reading at grade level by third grade, they are at a much greater risk of failing grades and dropping out of school altogether.

Many parents don't realize the importance of reading to babies starting at birth. Just twenty minutes of reading each day gives children many thousands of vocabulary words and hours of literacy before they ever start kindergarten.

Carthage Family Literacy Council fulfills this mission by providing a beautiful new Mother Goose book to each baby born at Freeman and Mercy Hospitals in Joplin. We adorn each book with a "Read to Me" bib, refrigerator magnet, and several bookmarks about the importance of reading with children starting at birth. We package it in a lovely reusable daisy print gift bag. Each package costs us approximately $15, with the retail value being about $35. We distribute about 200 packages per month to keep up with average birth rates in the area. If we can raise our goal of $3000, that would provide a month's worth of gift packages for sweet newborn babies! Each $30 donation would provide two gifts, or a $120 donation would pay for eight!

Please consider what you are able to do to help us reach our goal of increasing literacy rates! Thank you.

About Carthage Family Literacy Council

The purpose and mission of the Carthage Family Literacy Council is to promote early reading to babies (starting at birth) and continuing throughout the early childhood years. Research has shown this is the single most important factor in determining the future success of students.
To address this need, CFLC provides thousands of free new books each year to be distributed through Parents as Teachers in Carthage R-IX and Jasper County. We build and maintain Little Free Libraries for 24/7 access to free kids books around Carthage. CFLC also provides 200+ beautiful newborn book packages per month at Mercy and Freeman Hospitals to encourage parents to read to their child from birth. We provide two generous scholarships annually for CHS graduates planning on going into elementary education. We also support Carthage Public Library financially for their summer reading programs, and partner with Carthage Police Department to include books with gifts for the annual children’s Christmas Party. We partner with Head Start in Carthage to provide space for increased enrollment in Early Head Start. We feel strong links to other local organizations help us fulfill our mission and lift each of us up to help the community.
