Our Work in the Community
Carthage Family Literacy Council has invested years into lifting up children in southwest Missouri out of generational poverty by educating parents from the birth of their child about the importance of literacy. We have built relationships in the Carthage community that facilitate this work. We supply approximately 2500 beautiful Newborn Gift Packages to our area hospitals annually to pass out to every newborn baby's family. We also partner with the Parents as Teachers program, whom we supply with thousands of new books each year to pass out to the families they visit. These are our flagship programs although we do many smaller projects as well.
These programs require significant financial investment. If we are able to raise our goal of an additional $8000, we can put many, many more books into children's hands. We try to always be good stewards of our finances and search out the best deals we can find to give us the most and best quality books to supply to the community. The effects of a year of the Covid-19 virus have hurt so many and curtailed our normal fundraising opportunities, but the need for getting parents to read to their children is always with us. We don't want to be in danger of falling short on our Newborn Packages for any baby. Even when the schools were closed, our PAT program has been handing out books and creating "porch packs" that we supply books to include along with activities and crafts.
