Project Overview

The Need:

The Shewmaker Communication Center was built in 1989. It’s a fantastic facility, but the desks and chairs that served students so well 25 years ago need to be replaced.

Shewmaker 219 is a classroom where many entry-level-courses in the Department of Communication are taught. The room has an advantage when it comes to technology, but still would benefit from the fundamental resources that support student learning.

The funds raised for this project will renovate Shewmaker 219 into a modern learning environment through the purchase of new student desks and chairs. Communication faculty and students want to create a professional environment for presentations and a workspace that promotes hands-on learning for undergraduate and graduate students.

Your Donation:

$2,600 – Phase I makes it possible to purchase 20 Ergonomic Stand Alone desks that allow students to adjust the table height to meet their individual needs. We’re eager to move beyond the “one-size fits all” desks and provide a comfortable work space that better accommodates the laptops and tablets that play a key role in student learning. Thanks to 37 generous donors, we reached this goal on Day 7 of our campaign. We’ve got the momentum to tackle Phase II.

$1,400 -  Phase II makes it possible to purchase 20 new chairs to accompany the new desks. Adjustable height chairs on rollers will not only enhance student comfort, but will invite students to create room arrangements that promote collaboration and interaction.

$4,000 – This is the total cost of news desks and chairs for Shewmaker 219. By contributing beyond our Phase I goal, you can help us wrap up our campaign and create a new learning space for the start of the spring 2015 semester.

$5,000 – Help fund the finishing touches! The transformation of classroom 219 will require a new podium, instructional aids for displaying student work, and wall paint to brighten the room. Our new modern classroom will inspire professionalism and spark creativity.

About Drury University

Drury is a new kind of university that honors and effectively links liberal arts and sciences to the study of professional areas. In doing so, students are more authentically connected to:

  • Why what they are learning matters and how they can apply it in real life.
  • Why decisions, both personally and professionally, should come from a place of ethics and morality.
  • Faculty: accessibility is a point of pride for us because we are a teaching university.
  • The community: in the classroom, on campus and beyond.
  • Thought leaders and mentors: from freshman year to graduation to job search to alumni connections. At Drury, students make lifelong connections.
  • Wellness and sustainability as a way of life rather than a task. We believe healthy people lead happier, longer, more productive lives.
  • Community outreach as part of a life well lived.
  • A spirit of entrepreneurship, which inspires confidence, creativity and accountability.
  • An environment of collaboration where students are actively involved in enhancing their Drury experience.
  • A life well lived: Drury students learn how to connect dreams and aspirations to successful futures.

Make the connection. Pass it on.
